Tackling the Challenge of Provider Directories

Patients use many methods to identify the health care providers they need. Common sources include search engines, personal referrals from friends, doctor rating web sites, and social media. Many patients rely heavily on health plan provider directories to choose a doctor.

Provider directories include information about in-network providers, such as addresses, phone numbers, specialties, and other details. Unfortunately, furnishing insured patients with current and accurate information has been a continual challenge that causes problems for health plans, healthcare providers, and patients.

Inaccurate directories cause patients to experience delays, encounter unexpected expenses, or can even lead a patient to choose the wrong health plan. Errant information about which doctors and facilities are in-network can influence a patient’s plan selection.
